The emergence of online gaming has given rise to communities that are vibrant and interactive in ways not possible only a few years ago. A study by a Nottingham Trent University professor found that one quarter of 11,000 players of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Everquest said their favourite part of the game was socialisation with other gamers. This was a direct and early contradiction to the stereotype of video gamer as an isolated and antisocial individual.
How Cloud Gaming is Changing the Online Gaming Industry
For gaming businesses, online gaming allows them to connect with a global audience, eliminating geographical barriers and opening up new revenue opportunities. Furthermore, it provides gaming business with a rich database of player information and behaviour, which can be used to optimise gameplay and marketing strategies.
The current study aims to explore the harmful effects of online gaming on students’ academic performance. The research is based on a well-structured questionnaire that has been sent to respondents via email. Data analysis involved the use of descriptive and inferential statistics, including a correlational analysis between variables. Findings showed that there was a significant relationship between age, the respondent’s opinion of the long term problems caused by the habit of online gaming and their internet facility, educational qualifications and cumulative grade point average (CGPA). The findings of this study can help educators to understand the problems associated with students’ addiction to online gaming, as well as take proactive measures to address these issues.
